Wöllstein visits Great Barford
In May 2012, we enjoyed yet another wonderful visit from our Wollstein friends, made especially memorable by the fantastic weather throughout. It was not only the weather which made this weekend so special, but the participation of the wider village community in so many ways. This year was the Queen's Jubilee which was followed by our main Partnership event with our friends from Wöllstein spending four days with us over the weekend of May 26th. Because the two events were so close together we were able to bring the Jubilee into our Partnership weekend by decorating the Hall for our Partnership with some Jubilee bunting, thus adding to the overall atmosphere throughout the weekend. Of course the bunting was in the Hall again when Great Barford celebrated the Jubilee.
On arrival our visitors were treated to an impressive performance by the Alban Academy Wind Band, and we are most grateful to the school for helping us to get things off to such a great start.

Another highlight of the weekend was a very interesting visit to Kempston Fire Station, where great fun was had with fire hoses, as well as a fascinating demonstration of how cutting equipment is used to effect road traffic accident rescues. A huge thank you to the team there for making us so welcome.
Another big thank you should go to Great Barford’s very own Alma Singers, who came to entertain us at our Saturday evening dinner dance. Their songs from the shows helped to create a truly memorable evening and were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, earning a very well-deserved standing ovation. Hosts and guests were particularly impressed and very keen to see the full choir in Wöllstein.
Once again the Bowls Club kindly welcomed all Partnership members along on Sunday, for which our sincere thanks. A pleasant time was had by all those who attended. |
On Monday guests and hosts enjoyed an extremely interesting and entertaining tour of BBC Television Centre at Shepherds Bush, followed by a stop off at St Albans, to visit the Cathedral.
We returned home in time for Games Night and a traditional fish and chip supper. The hotly contested competition involving carpet bowls, darts and bar skittles ended in a draw on this occasion.

Lastly, although by no means least, we would like to say a huge thank you to Mark Harlow, freestyle footie star, who kindly came along and treated us all to an amazing display of his skills. The children of the group were really inspired and we particularly appreciated the time Mark spent with them afterwards. It was the perfect end to a very special weekend.
